Nostalgia, that ache or yearning for times past, which goes hand in hand with looking at earlier years through rose-coloured glasses, is strongly present in Jo’s work.

About

Australian leisure rituals and stories of rural community spirit are told through bold colour works that are both nostalgic and modern and have become a hallmark of Jo White's work.

Jo's childhood, spent on sheep and broadacre farms in rural New South Wales, has greatly influenced her depictions of life in rural Australia.

And it’s not just life on the land that influences her artistic practice. Jo’s work is attuned to the way certain objects attain totemic significance with resonances specific to a place or pop-cultural moment.

This remarkable way of telling stories with paint has more recently seen the development of assemblage pieces and sculpture - a format Jo created when she had so much to say it simply couldn't fit on one flat canvas.

There is a special place in her heart for Australian pop culture and capturing the magic in the day-to-day Down Under.
